In Loving Memory of Eleonore (Elly) Frankl

“The warmth that accompanied the light.”
— Jacob Needleman

A Tribute from the Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy

To identify her as the wife of Viktor Frankl acknowledges an important part of her life, yet does not fully capture her own remarkable contributions. To those associated with the Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy, she embodied the spirit and practice of Logotherapy through her kindness, generosity, and presence.

Her contribution to the growth and dissemination of Logotherapy was profound and immeasurable. As Dr. Frankl wrote, “In death, a person has become his whole, complete life.”  We are deeply grateful for the profound impact she has had on each of our lives through her work with Dr. Frankl.

May Elly Frankl remain in our hearts and memories as an enduring example of compassion, meaning, and the human spirit that lies at the heart of Logotherapy. Her life continues to inspire all who were privileged to know her and her support of the work of Dr. Viktor Frankl.

A Personal Remembrance

Drs. Robert and Dorothy Barnes with Viktor and Elly Frankl in Vienna

This photograph was taken in the Frankls’ home during the summer before Dr. Frankl’s death.

It was through a Congress of the Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy that Drs. Robert and Dorothy Barnes first met Dr. Viktor and Elly Frankl. What began as a desire to deepen their understanding of Logotherapy and share its message with others grew into a close professional collaboration and a lasting friendship.

This image captures not only a significant moment in that relationship but also the warmth, hospitality, and personal connection that characterized the Frankls’ lives and their enduring friendship with the Barnes family.

Further Reflections on Elly Frankl’s Legacy

One of the most moving reflections written following Elly Frankl’s passing comes from Alexander Batthyány, President of the Viktor Frankl Institute Vienna.

His obituary offers a deeply personal and thoughtful account of Elly Frankl’s life, her devotion to Viktor Frankl’s work, and her unique contribution to the preservation and continuation of the Frankl legacy.
